A region in the region is Salento, the area included in the heel of the boot of the peninsula that extends out to the south-east between
two seas, the Ionian and Adriatic seas. Salento is a land populated since prehistoric times by different people: Messapians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans. As a fi rst approximation today we consider the Salento as coincident with the province of Lecce, but several authors consider the issue more complex with reference to the traditions and languages spoken. For this book is mainly considered the adriatic coastline. Several natural areas such as Alimini Lakes, the reserve Le Cesine and different sites like the Park of Otranto - Santa Maria di Leuca coast and forest of Tricase. Other points of interest are the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate, the city of Otranto and the city of Lecce. From the cycling point of view the coastal route is of extreme scenic interest for the constant view of
the sea. The roughness of the coast, however, presents several ups and downs, sometimes diffi cult, while for the traffi c it’s a bit the topic of the seasonal attendance and circulation, really signifi cant in the tourist season.
